Let’s Talk About Grief, Loss, and Widowhood

When you’re widowed, talking about grief and loss is crucial for emotional and mental health.

When you share your thoughts, feelings, and emotions with others, it gives them an opportunity to support you, and reminds you that you're not alone.

Talking about grief also helps normalize it by breaking the silence around loss, allowing emotions to surface. This can help bring healing to everyone in a conversation.

Myths About Grief and Widowhood

Widowhood often walks hand-in-hand with myths and misjudgments that can make things harder for you as a grieving person.

Some people in your life may believe there's a right way for you to grieve, or a wrong way for you to grieve, or a timeline for you to do it, but each person grieves differently.

When well-meaning people share their grief and loss myths or misconceptions with you, it can make you feel pressured to experience your grief in a manner that’s not true to yourself.

In this video, we discuss several common grief and widowhood myths to help you feel supported and remind you that you don’t need to buy into someone else’s beliefs or misbeliefs about the ways you are, or are not, grieving.

Tell People What You Do — and Don’t — Need

Letting people know what you need in grief can be extremely hard, especially because you yourself may not know. Sometimes it may be easier to let people know what you don’t need.

Say Their Name

When your person dies, you may find that some people in your life, or even many of them, stop saying their name.

“Get Over It”

When someone tells you to "get over it" or “just move on” from your grief, it can be extremely hurtful and invalidating.

Finding Mental Health Support

It’s okay to seek help with your grief process. You don’t have to do it all alone.

Grief Has No Timeline

There is no timeline for grief. Grieving takes as long as it takes. However long this process is for you, that’s okay.

Choosing to Heal

Choosing to heal means finding a self-loving way to live alongside your loss, to companion it. To acknowledge it and walk beside it as you commit to self growth and forward momentum in your life.
